It can be seen from The Round House that complex characters develop over the course of the text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot, or develop a theme. For example, the protagonist, Joe, can be seen to change throughout the course of the book. He begins talking about how his life is generally boring and monotonous. But throughout the course of the book, Joe is seen to be more significant in the conflict of the book. On page 6, Joe describes how his life was usually spent time "prying little trees out". But on page 188, Joe is perceived as one who goes on to find clues and ways to move on in his journey. He begins to sell lost golf balls in order to receive money. Joe is seen to be a polite and humble boy, living in the wealthier area of the reservation. He pays no attention to his inherited wealth and goes on to solve the mystery of his mother himself. He does this by communicating with humility and faith, as seen on page 136, where Joe keeps the secret of Sonja to himself and develops a trusting relationship with her. Joe advances the plot because of how he not only communicates with characters, but also because of his cleverness. He is shown to be clever on page 145, where even though his own father asks about Sonja's secret, Joe digresses to change the subject. This advances the plot because it allows the story to move on. If Joe had not done this, the book would have ended with Joe's father knowing Sonja's important secret.
